The New facebook film is a must see…
No wonder, like me, everyone wants to stake a claim in Facebook’s history. And, for the ostensible part, this is what the film The Social Network is about. We watch how, in the Autumn of 2003, Harvard student and computer nerd Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) progresses from the brilliant calamity of “Facemash”, his first social networking prototype, to Facebook. As Zuckerberg’s creature snowballs in popularity and financial credence, two separate law suits are filed against him, both arguing that Zuckerberg has ripped them off.
On one bench Zuckerberg faces two paragons of blonde-haired, blue-eyed American old money, the self-righteous Winklevoss twins (Armie Hammer). Tall, athletic and “smashing” in my mother’s words, their contention is Zuckerberg stole their original idea of a networking site built on exclusivity. On another bench, across town and not in an oak panelled boardroom, sits plaintiff Eduardo de Saverin (Andrew Garfield) Zuckerberg’s best friend and initial financier. Narrative twists and turns with that of the Winklevoss’ gives us one completed story of Facebook and its creator.
Regardless of the sentiments we build along the way, and those of the other characters, ultimately the story starts and ends with what Zuckerberg makes his own characteristically curt self-defence, “If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you’d have invented Facebook”. Of course the fact is, only Zuckerberg did.
This is a fast moving film. The screen play is as brilliant and funny as you’d expect from Aaron Sorkin, the author of A Few Good Men and The West Wing, while the direction packs the same punch as Se7en, Fight Club and The Game all of which David Fincher directed before. The Social Network portrays a world of wild excess so perhaps it’s not surprising that everything in it might not be true. Even the publisher of The Accidental Billionaires, the book on which the film is based, admitted: ‘The book isn’t reportage. It’s big juicy fun.’ And rather predictably, Zuckerberg is less than impressed with his on-screen character. With a reaction we might expect from him after watching the film, the real Zuckerberg was keen to point out he was still dating today the same girl he dated when he started Facebook and he never used the site to meet girls. However, even Zuckerberg admits the film’s wardrobe is good, he told a class at Stanford University he really does own every shirt and fleece that he is shown wearing in the movie.
You’ll never look at your Facebook account in the same way again. Go see it.
